Pretty good turnout to watch U19 Boys Final between Eastside FC (Oregon) and Sereno (AZ)

A great contest between two great teams. Defending National Champs Eastside FC (Oregon) v. Sereno (AZ) Sereno claimed the regional crown this year. Now they face the test of whether they can win the national title--at home. US Youth Soccer Nationals will be played in Phoenix next month.

FC Nova Fans

FC Nova U19 G drew a Far West Regionals record crowd for their final game against Real Colorado. Nova lost a heartbreaker for the hometown fans having a 3-2 lead until the last five minutes. Real won 5-3.

The finals are in the books, but here are photos of volunteers, spectators and some field action (hard to do with a tiny backpacking camera, but we try!) Check it out.

A good audience turned out to watch FC Nova's U12 Girls in their first-ever Far West Regionals appearance. It's nice to be the home town team.

This one's admittedly fuzzy, but we liked the air, the hair and the shades and just HAD to post it. Soccer players are fun to watch and have a certain flair.

Other teams, local fans and other Rush teams came to watch the U17 Idaho Rush boys.

Wave of The Future?

The most eye-catching uniforms of the week clearly belonged to SoCal Blues (top three photos) and FC Nova (in the pink.) Neon colors the cameras can't quite duplicate brightened the pitch. The pink, by the way, is worn by the Nova players to raise awareness of efforts to fight breast cancer. Nova coaches report that some of the boys teams want to wear the pink. And the girls say that would be one way to impress them!

Visitors to the Simplot Sports Complex chuckled at a sign the locals have learned to take for granted.

Then again, those of us who've lived around Idaho long enough, can remember when the area around the sports complex was a lot of scrub sage and horses & llamas weren't altogether that out-of-the question. We love some of the local quirks still in existence.

So-Cal Suburban Kickers to Idaho Mountain Men

Wandering around Ann Morrison park brought us to a practice by the Irvine Soccer Academy U18 Boys team. In order to cut costs, this team is camping near Idaho City. That's in the mountains about 20-30 miles east of Boise at an altitude of 3907 feet. There may be some methodology that makes sense here. Serious mountain climbers have a saying for adjusting to altitude: "Climb high. Sleep low." That means climbers go about a thousand feet above their camp and then hike back down to where they will sleep each night. This, apparently, helps climbers adjust to extreme altitude. Boise is by no means at an extreme altitude (2730 feet), but coaches from sea-level cities are wondering whether altitude will be a factor for their players. It's a cost-saving measure, but it can't hurt these hardy SoCal players have to rough it in the mountains, braving rain, cold and altitude. No question these guys are tough. Mass Planning

Planning for a US Youth Soccer Championship Series tournament takes more than a year of planning. A staggering list of details and logistics demand attention so that 232 teams (nearly 4-thousand players) can compete seamlessly on 21 fields. US Youth Soccer estimates that players, volunteers, coaches, referees, vendors and soccer families in Boise this week will total about 20-thousand people!

US Youth Soccer reps meet with IYSA staff and officers planning the biggest gathering of elite youth soccer players in the west. How many Region IV champions will move on to claim a national title?

The fleet of more than 50 golf carts needed to move people around the 21 fields.

Details, details. IYSA even had to plan for 46 portable toilets to be delivered to the fields.

It is a logistics and detail list guaranteed to send most of us racing to a dark corner. IYSA's secret weapon is Shelly Adlard, who has carried lists, spreadsheets and minutiae around with her for more than a year checking and double-checking. On the list, things like: 100 trash cans, 50 recycle bins, 325 referees and making sure they are fed. Her admirers are calling her The CEO and she is really pretty calm just before the curtain goes up.

Our CEO, Shelly Adlard, giving guidance to the field maintenance bosses. Shelly is a bit hard to pin down with a camera, but there are determined photographers to get the job done. When you see Shelly this week, say hello and thank her for a tremendous effort.

Had to share this older photo of Simplot Sports Complex. This was taken in late October when the hillsides north of the city are covered in bleached grasses. When the sun begins to set, the grasses take on the colors of the sunset. In early spring, soccer parents are getting a view of snow-topped mountains.

What to pack, what to pack.....

If you're like most of us, you wonder just what to toss in the suitcase when you set off for an out of town tournament. Boise has had an unusually wet May and June (so far), thus making everything far greener than you would expect in an area on a semi-arid high desert plain. Enjoy. It's pretty.

The players will be happy to know that, at this point, forecasts are calling for mostly 70's with one day peaking in the mid-80s before dropping back into the 70s. This is cooler than usual. There's not much call for rain, but bring light rain jackets and be ready to dress in layers. When it is still cool outside, put on your short-sleeved or tank top and put a light shirt or very light jacket over it. Bring a fleece or sweater for early in the day or evening. You could toss in an umbrella.

As for footwear, you know the drill. You're a soccer parent, after all. Wear your most comfortable. If you're planning dinner out, remember that Boise is a casual city that has more recently attracted a wave of outdoor enthusiasts as residents. While Boise has surpassed Spokane as the Northwest's third largest city, you're likely to see the locals dressed in microfiber hiking shorts, Tevas and Patagonia at the more casual restaurants. (Think Boulder with a little less lycra.) You will actually find North Face and Helly Henson stores in downtown Boise. Business casual (at least a collared shirt for men and a pair of slacks or skirt and nice top for women) is fine at nicer restaurants if you can even find the time to explore the local fare. We know how much time it takes to support a soccer team!

Please remember your sunscreen and water bottles. The weather pattern is inching back toward our usual dry state and you will feel it. Hydrate. (And urge a little extra water onto your players if you're from a more humid climate.)

Just Another Beautiful Day In Boise

Our beautiful Boise weather lingers on into fall. This photo is of a game at the Simplot Sports Complex where you will be playing regional games. You can see the rugged Boise foothills in the distance and the cloudless skies.

This photo was taken September 29th and it positively felt like summer. Today, forecasters predict the temperature will hit 90 degrees F. You can expect beautiful weather here in June. We make no promises, as June 2010 turned out a little on the wet side (a shock to our western sensibilities.) The average high temperature for June in Boise is 80.3 degrees F, the average monthly rainfall is .74" and the average daily sunshine is 75%.
Because weather can be unpredictable unless you're watching the satellite up to the minute, we recommend packing in layers since it can be very fairly cool and/or wet and it can reach into the high 90s. You'll be able to check the weather as tournament week approaches.

Albuquerque Today, Boise Next Year

It seems fitting to start this blog and post our first entry on the day that Landon Donovan scored the heroic last-minute goal to make US soccer history and launch the men's team into the next round of play at World Cup in South Africa. What a day it has been for soccer fans in the US! The excitement builds as ESPN reports a doubling of viewers from World Cup 2006. We think it may be a direct relationship to the exploding numbers of youth soccer players across the US. From youth soccer, great players and great fans are born!

In Albuquerque at the US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals, some disappointed players are packing their bags as the surviving teams rest and prepare for the quarter final round of games Friday. Administrators and board members from Idaho Youth Soccer are in Albuquerque tonight, not just rooting for the Idaho teams still in the running, but carefully taking note of their favorite features of a well-run tournament. Next year, it will be us rising early and staying late to ensure that all is ready for each successive day of play. For now, thanks to the host committee in New Mexico which is shouldering the burden. You may be hearing from us a few times.

Meanwhile, we're excited to be doing the job. We can't wait to welcome you to Idaho. If you already live here and love the game of soccer, consider coming to the fields next June to see the best youth soccer players in the west. It's all about great soccer.
